about

Composed by Jeff Sulima. Redline Trio featuring NY pianist Steve Hudson

The music that you hold in your hands, (or have stashed on your phone, or are streaming from the cloud) owes its existence in part to a long-running weekly gig at Calgary’s Betty Lou’s Library.

Despite its name, the classy basement speakeasy doesn’t lend books. Rather, it creates cocktails and presents music for the pleasure of its imbibing patrons.

“The great thing about Betty Lou's is that we have total freedom to play what and how we want” DeJong says.

A year into their residency, they dubbed themselves the Redline Trio, a name that refers to the point on a gauge that tips into the danger zone.

Soon the trio began inviting guest musicians to join them, at Betty Lou’s and beyond, including Vancouver trumpeter Brad Turner, New York bassist Brandi Disterheft, Toronto pianist David Braid, and New York pianist Steve Hudson.

Canadian jazz fans may not know the last of those players. But The Redline Trio Featuring Steve Hudson should set them straight.

DeJong met Hudson when they both studied jazz at Rutgers University in New Jersey. Hudson, DeJong says, “is a wonderful collaborator who will put incredible passion and dedication towards any project, and is selfless in his efforts.

“The thing we love about Steve is that he patiently works on an idea and finds unconventional ways to turn the idea into a statement.

The recording session at the Banff Centre was made possible by a grant from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.

Hudson states that “Just being in Banff made the whole recording special, in that we were in a world of our own, and it really allowed us to just be in that creative space and focus. After the first beat dropped, we just dove into the music and didn’t look back.

Among the album’s eight tracks are five penned by DeJong.

The Malecon was written after a recent trip to Cuba and was inspired by the feeling that music is omnipresent in that country’s culture.

The Late Shift is a catchy minor blues with a tempo change worthy of the tune’s name. Equally swinging is Happenstance, which sits on the harmonic grid of the jazz standard It Could Happen To You.

Space Force is pretty, and wide open, while Storm Chasers is expansive and dramatic.

DeJong says he strives to write simple, listenable tunes that keep the interaction honest and really just let us play at our best.”

Completing the album are Poor Butterfly, a duo jaunt for piano and sax, Hudson’s mellow Latin tune Off The Grid and Captain Trips, a tune that Sulima wrote when he was at Capilano in Vancouver.

Recording that tune ”was both nerve wracking and musically satisfying!” says Sulima. “This was the first time I’ve brought a tune of my own to record with anyone.“

Bassist Shepard is the young lion of the group and a mainstay on the Calgary music scene. Shepard says that returning to the studio was a bit of a trip for him. “I'm not the biggest fan of headphones!”

But the consensus in the group is that they’re well-represented by the recording, and that their music will connect with listeners.
